What is a veterinarian?

A veterinarian is a medical doctor who has gone to a certified school of veterinary medicine and has passed a national exam. Veterinarians work in many different fields. Some work on small animals, like pets, and on large animals, like dairy cows. Others have specialties in exotic animals, birds, zoo animals or wildlife.

Your animal can't tell you what it needs, but your veterinarian has the education and technology to know what to do to keep your animal healthy. Your veterinarian can advise you on every aspect of your animal's health, including diet and exercise, interaction with other animals and family members, preventive measures to ensure your animal's health, and ways to address illness and injury. Veterinarians are critical in preventing the transmission of animal diseases to people, and by maintaining the health of food animals, keep our food supply clean and safe.

Choosing a veterinarian
Choosing a veterinarian should happen before you choose your pet or purchase farm animals. Your veterinarian can advise you on the type of animal which would be most suited to your lifestyle.

When you are choosing a veterinarian, there are specific things you should look for to ensure you are finding a doctor who can meet your needs. Asking a few basic questions from the beginning will help you build a good relationship with your veterinarian and help keep your animal well.
