Membership Types

Student Member

A student member is a non-veterinarian who is currently enrolled at the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. Such person may participate in association activities and serve in designated student ex-officio positions on the executive board and committees. This individual shall not be allowed to vote.

New Graduate Member

Upon graduation and application for membership, new graduates will be accepted into active member status. They will receive all the benefits of membership, but will not be required to pay dues until January 1 of the calendar year following graduation.

Graduate Student Veterinarians

Graduate students, interns, or residents who are already veterinarians are eligible for free membership for the remainder of the calendar year in which they apply. After that time, they will pay 50% dues. They must show proof of being full-time students and must apply annually to remain in this category. They are to receive all benefits of membership and are eligible to hold elected office and vote.

Privileged Member

A privileged member is one who has reached the age of 65 years by January 1 of the year the application is made and is not eligible to become a life member. Upon application to the association, such person may be designated a privileged member following the approval of the executive board. A privileged member shall pay 50% of the annual dues. Such privileged member may participate in association activities and serve on committees but may not hold elective office or serve as a member of the executive board. This individual shall not be allowed to vote.

Out-of-State Member

The individual recognized as an out-of-state member must reside outside the state of Wisconsin, may participate in association meetings and activities but shall not hold elective office or vote nor be eligible for any WVMA insurance program. Dues will be 50% the amount charged to active members.

Associate Member

An associate member is one who is not a graduate veterinarian but who is actively engaged in a closely allied science. Nomination shall be by two members in good standing and must be presented to the executive board for election. Such associate member may participate in association meetings and serve on committees but shall not hold an elective office or vote and shall pay 50% of the annual dues.

Honorary Member

An honorary member shall be a person of good character and one who has contributed to the advancement of veterinary medicine, animal health or agriculture. Nomination may be by a constituent association, an officer or a board member. The executive board shall consider the nomination to decide upon approval. An honorary member may participate in association meetings but may not vote. This individual shall not be eligible to hold any office and is exempt from paying dues.

Life Member

A life member is one who has reached the age of 65 years by January 1 of the year the application is made and has been an active member of the state association for at least 30 continuous years. Upon application to the association, such person may be designated a life member following the approval of the executive board. A life member shall be exempt from paying dues. Such life member may participate in association activities and serve on the committees but may not hold elective office or serve as a member of the executive board. This individual shall not be allowed to vote.

Active Member

An active member shall be a graduate of a veterinary school recognized by the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), or licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Wisconsin. Such active member must be of good character and his/her professional conduct must meet the requirements of the code of ethics of the AVMA.

Dues payment must be current.
