On March 9, Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association Member, Dr. Keith Poulsen spoke at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health Department of Pediatrics Grand Rounds. His talk titled, "Is 'I grew up on a farm' Enough to Protect your Patients from Zoonotic Disease?", was a part of the WVMA's Public Health and Food Safety Committee's goal to educate human doctors on the One Health model.

"The talk was relevant for the group because it focused on zoonotic disease" says Dr. Poulsen, who has a split appointment at the School of Veterinary Medicine and Wisconsin Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. "The pediatrics department is a great place to start sharing information because children are at a higher risk for infections of zoonotic and foodborne disease compared to adults."

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) awarded Sheila McGuirk, DVM, MS, PhD, DACVIM of Dodgeville, the WVMA Veterinarian of the Year Award at its 101st Annual Convention on Friday, Oct. 14.

Dr. Nigel Cook believes Dr. McGuirk is synonymous with calf health and disease and the queen of bovine internal medicine.

On June 14, Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) President, Dr. John T. Been, presented Morgan Fitzsimmons, of Mineral Point, with the State FFA Veterinary Science Proficiency Award at the 87th Annual State FFA Convention in Madison. This award recognizes the student who best demonstrates an understanding of veterinary medical practices and animal health care in Wisconsin.

Mark your calendar for the 2016 WVMA Annual Convention – Rock n Roll – being held October 13-16 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison, Wis.

WVMA 2016 Logo FinalThe convention will be held in conjunction with the Wisconsin Veterinary Technician Association and Wisconsin Veterinary Practice Managers Association conventions, and features an immense lineup of nationally acclaimed speakers and trade show vendors.

Large animal tracks will include veterinary feed directive changes, reproduction, drug residue, new technology for clinics and equine dentistry. Gastrointestinal disease, clinical pathology, ophthalmology, dermatology, imaging and pain management will be featured in small animal tracks along with a wetlab on oncology.

On March 21, the Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Association (WVMA) and Invisible Fence® Brand presented Juneau EMS, Horicon EMS, Clyman Fire and Rescue Department and Horicon Police Department with emergency oxygen masks for pets. These donations were made possible because of Project BreatheTM, a partnership between the WVMA and Invisible Fence® Brand.

The Wisconsin Veterinary Medical Assocation (WVMA)  recognized four members at the 2015 WVMA Annual Convention on October 9 for their 50 years of membership. To receive this  award, a veterinarian must maintiain their membership for 50 continuous years. The following members met  this milestone in 2015.

Wayne Benstead, DVM
Dr. Wayne Benstead graduated from the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine in 1962. He is a small animal veterinarian who spent most of his career practicing veterinary medicine in Delavan, WI. Dr. Benstead started his career in 1963 with Dr. Paul O'Conner. In 1964, he joined a mixed animal practice in Delavan, WI. Dr. Benstead bought that clinic from Dr. Kelsey in 1971 and turned it into a small animal practice. In 1976, he built his own practice called the Delavan Small Animal Clinic. In 1993, Dr. Benstead sold his clinic, but he continues to work part-time.
