Thursday, September 24: Improving Calf Barn Air Quality through Positive Pressure Tube Systems and Barn Design (8.0 CE Credits)
As many dairies move away from hutches and into calf barns, positive pressure tube ventilation (PPTV) systems have emerged as a basic tool to improve air quality in calf barns. Dr. Ken Nordlund will present on building design and management to minimize respiratory disease in calves, deficits of common ventilation systems in calf barns, and principles of positive pressure
Dr. Rebecca Brotzman and the Dairyland Initiative staff will lead participants through hands-on exercises to learn how to use the Positive Pressure Tube Calculator to create specifications for example barns. Participants will leave this workshop with field-ready skills to improve respiratory health in calf barns, and will be listed on the Dairyland Initiative website as trained consultants in positive pressure tube design. Following the workshop, trainees will have the opportunity to become a Dairyland Initiative Certified Consultant in PPTV design for youngstock
Friday, September 25: The Dairyland Initiative Youngstock Housing Tours (9.5 CE Credits)
This event will showcase farms that have seen success in their youngstock programs through excellent facility design. First, we will tour Meadow Brook Dairy Farm’s “all-in, all-out” automatic group nursery barns, featuring winter and warm weather supplemental positive pressure tube ventilation. Next, we will visit Hanke Farms’ heifer freestall barn, designed for both comfort and ease of management. Our final stop at Double S Dairy will highlight calf nurseries with individual pens and “all-in, all-out” management. The Dairyland Initiative Youngstock Housing Tours are a great way to see in action what you’ve read about on the website and learned in the workshops!
