This short course, the first in the East Meets West series, will discuss osteoarthritis. The first half-of the course will cover the pathophysiology, detection and conventional management of osteoarthritis, including pharmacologic therapies. The second portion of the day will be devoted to “thinking outside the box” when it comes to the management of OA in our patients. Among the topics to be discussed will be acupuncture, from both a traditional Eastern medicine approach as well as a current medical approach. Additionally, the role of physical rehabilitation in OA treatment will be presented. Lastly, a discussion about what is on the horizon for OA treatment will be covered. Attendees should expect to take away a more solid understanding of osteoarthritis and its management, both conventional and “outside the box” therapies.
