DATCP Urges Poultry Producers to Review Biosecurity Practices

DATCP Reminds Poultry Producers to Review Biosecurity

The Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) is encouraging poultry producers to review their biosecurity measures following the discovery of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a commercial turkey flock in South Carolina.

While there is no current threat to Wisconsin poultry, DATCP and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) are reminding all bird owners to practice good biosecurity and report sick birds or unusual bird deaths. No human illness has been associated with this virus, and there is no immediate public health concern.

On April 9, the USDA confirmed the presence of H7N3 avian influenza in Chesterfield County, South Carolina. State officials quarantined the affected area and depopulated the birds to prevent spread of the disease.

The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) is working with the South Carolina State Veterinarian’s Office on a joint incident response. State and federal agencies are continuing surveillance and testing in nearby areas.
