Dr. Birkenheuer received his DVM from the University of Florida and his PhD in Immunology from NC State University.  His research emphasis included epidemiology, molecular characterization, molecular diagnosis, and treatment of vector borne diseases in dogs and cats. He is currently a professor of internal medicine at NC State College of Veterinary Medicine.
